Kindergarten Social Studies End-of-Unit Review
General Instructions & All About Me

Welcome to the Kindergarten Social Studies Assessment Guide!

This guide is designed for adults (teachers or parents) to observe and document a Kindergarten student's understanding of key social studies concepts. The assessment focuses on observation, discussion, drawing, and role-playing, rather than written responses, to best capture a 5-6 year old's learning.

How to Administer:

  • Create a Supportive Environment: Ensure the child feels safe, comfortable, and encouraged. This is not a test with right or wrong answers, but an opportunity to share what they know.
  • Read Prompts Clearly: Read each prompt exactly as written.
  • Allow Time for Response: Give the child ample time to draw, think, and respond orally or through action.
  • Document Observations: Take notes on their responses, enthusiasm, and any insights into their understanding. Use the 'Correct Answer' section for each question as a guide for what to observe and document.
  • Be Flexible: If a child needs a small rephrase or encouragement, provide it gently. The goal is to see what they know, not to trip them up.
  • Keep it Fun! Make it an enjoyable interaction.

Holidays & Concluding Remarks

Interpreting Responses:

When reviewing the child's responses, focus on their effort, participation, and demonstrated understanding of the concepts rather than seeking 'correct' answers in a rigid sense. For drawing activities, look for effort, representation of the prompt, and any verbal explanations they offer. For oral responses, note their ability to express ideas, use relevant vocabulary, and share personal experiences. For role-playing, observe their ability to demonstrate social skills, follow instructions, and show empathy or understanding of social norms. Every child develops at their own pace, and this assessment is a snapshot of their current understanding. Celebrate their efforts and the unique ways they express their learning!

11.

Draw a picture of your favorite holiday and what you do to celebrate it.

12.

Tell me about a holiday your family celebrates. What makes it special to you?
