The Life of a Butterfly

A butterfly begins its life as a tiny egg, usually laid on a leaf. After a few days, a small caterpillar, also called a larva, hatches from the egg. This caterpillar is very hungry! It eats and eats, growing bigger and bigger. As it grows, its skin becomes too tight, so it sheds its skin several times. This is called molting.

When the caterpillar is full-grown, it finds a safe place to attach itself. It then forms a chrysalis around its body. Inside the chrysalis, an amazing change happens. The caterpillar slowly transforms. This stage is called the pupa. It can last for a few weeks or even months, depending on the type of butterfly and the weather.

Finally, the chrysalis opens, and a beautiful adult butterfly emerges! Its wings are wet at first, but they soon dry. The butterfly will then fly off to drink nectar from flowers and lay its own eggs, starting the cycle all over again. The entire process, from egg to adult butterfly, is called metamorphosis.
